Government launches review into the future of apprenticeships

The Government has launched a review into the future of apprenticeships.
Led by entrepreneur Doug Richard, the review aims to identify how apprenticeships can best meet the needs of employers, individuals and the wider economy.
It will also strive to ascertain what makes a good apprenticeship and which types of learners and employers can benefit most from such opportunities.
The Business Secretary Vince Cable said young people had previously been ‘let down by weak courses’.
‘To build a prosperous economy we need a skilled workforce,’ he said. ‘The apprenticeship programme has been a real success, not only boosting chances for young people, but also helping businesses to address their skills gaps.
‘However, in the past, vocational youngsters have been let down by weak courses and our competitors have stolen a march.’
The number of apprenticeships increased by 63% last year after the Government invested £1bn in apprenticeships in England.
